Keep Calm and ‘Love Your Lungs’

With an estimated 1 in 5 people with a history of lung diseases in the UK, and many more who are likely to be still undiagnosed, the British Lung Foundation has a lot to do to offer help and support. This is why we are proud to have supported them to organize the ‘Love Your Lungs’ screening days in Birmingham, an opportunity to identify the ‘missing millions’ and raise awareness of lung conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“COPD is an umbrella term for chronic bronchitis and emphysema”, explains Dr Richard Glover, British Lung Foundation. “The benefit of being tested at events like these is because the best treatments for COPD are early intervention, smoking cessation and lifestyle changes to prevent the progression of the disease over time”.

Yet previous research from the British Lung Foundation has indicated that up to two-thirds of people living with COPD may remain undiagnosed.

For three days, from June 29 to July 1, trained nurses and volunteers of the British Lung Foundation set up and run free spirometry screenings in popular shopping centres around Birmingham. Approximately 250 people of all ages had their lungs tested and received a friendly information pack on COPD, smoking cessation and local support services. Twenty-six of them, who were found to have concerning symptoms, were referred to their doctors for additional investigation.

“I think you should give it a go, if not for you, for the rest of your family.” -Event Participant
